Robinson, Marilynne

Robinson returns to the Gilead stage to narrate the homecoming of Jack and Gloria, Reverend Boughton's children. Gloria, thirty-eight years old, has returned to the family home to care for her dying father. Before long, Ella's brother Jack Ella, a prodigal son who has been away for twenty years, returns home seeking refuge and trying to come to terms with a past marked by worry and pain. A bad boy since childhood, an alcoholic unable to keep a job, he lives perpetually at odds with everything around him and, especially, with his father's traditionalism, although, brilliant and charming, he remains Reverend Boughton's most beloved son. While her father lives his last days, Gloria and Jack will establish an intense relationship.
