Sófocles

Over time, Sophocles (c. 496-406 BC) has become the paradigmatic author of Greek tragedy, and our understanding of this genre and its philosophical and religious implications rests heavily on his work. Among his preserved production, Ajax is considered his oldest tragedy, indebted to the poetic style of Aeschylus and, therefore, an important link between the original theater and a later stage of dramatic purification. During the war, Ajax claims to inherit Achilles's weapons, but they are denied in favor of Odyssey. Athena, protector of the king of Ithaca and resentful of Ajax, takes advantage of the situation to take revenge on him by putting him in a ridiculous situation. The hero of this tragedy, inordinate in his arrogance and his insanity, is a victim of pride and passion, but faces his fate with nobility.
