1984
Orwell, George
To say 1984 is to say dystopia. Because this is a novel that presents us with a possible future of the most terrifying possible, and not only because of the violence that power can exercise against dissidents, but also because of the manipulation of the masses, the instrumentalization of the past or the deprivation of privacy of the citizens. As in Animal Farm, its direct reading is a fantastical reflection of Stalinism, but in a broader vision it is a story of how advances in social science can be used to crush the individual as such and force him to dissolve into the mass. . And done in such a way that, although the use of violence is present, the main tool for this is to present dissidence as evil and harmful, and the omnipresent power as beneficial, protective and savior. Elements that -apart from the literary quality- have made the work survive the Stalinism it criticized.
