A year after the death of King Gustavo III, the winds of the French Revolution even reached Sweden, where the tension is palpable throughout the country, turned into a nest of conspiracies, suspicions and misgivings. In this unbreathable atmosphere, Mickel Cardell, a veteran of the war against Russia, discovers an excruciatingly mutilated body in a Stockholm lake. A tuberculous lawyer, the shrewd and incorruptible Cecil Winge, is in charge of the investigations, but time is pressing: his health is precarious, the monarchy is making water and revolts are the order of the day. Winge and Cardell will be immersed in a world of crooks and thieves, rich and poor, pious and sinful, mercenaries and prostitutes.
