Visita a la senyora Soler
Pedrolo, Manuel de
Villalonga, Anna Maria
(ed.)
"It is of an immoral background, much more than a form, so enormous, that we consider it impossible to publish it". With this resoundingness, Franco's censorship prevented readers from visiting Visita a la Senyora Soler in 1971, one of Manuel de Pedrolo's "lost novels", which has remained unpublished until now. Written in 1959, female sexuality is treated from a completely intolerable point of view for the morals of the time. Jordina is 27 years old and has never had sex. The family and social environment represses their desire. But Jordina has a recurring sexual nightmare, and with the help of her friend Simona and psychoanalysis, she finds a way to express her deepest feelings and needs. The consequences of this awakening will be unpredictable. With the political and social background of the gray Barcelona of the post-war period, Visit to Mrs. Soler becomes an agonizing song in favor of freedom. The author shows the repression, the moral oppression of guilt and sin, the difficulty of living to the fullest, and brings us closer to the claim, always present in his novels, of the sexual freedom of women, the his personality, character and ability to decide what he wants and wants.
