Joan Domènech, a lonely man with two bundles of clothes and a single leg, has returned from the depths of oblivion and is now sitting on a bench in the Barcelona of 1942. A stupid youthful grudge condemned him to enlist in the Blue Division to avoid the reprisals of Franco's military when they enter Valls. Isolated in an eternal and bloody journey to Leningrad, he will cling to the true meaning of the words to preserve the memory of Teresa Font, an honest and determined republican militia. Until he realizes that, lost in a Europe in ashes, he may not have been as alone as he thought. Another man, Dimitry Pavlov, a lumberjack from the Siberian taiga, a soldier in the Red Army, has lived a life parallel to his own.
