Viajes literarios

cartografía de recorridos ficticios a través del mundo de la literatura

McMurtrie, John

Buckle up and enjoy the journey through 75 international works of fiction spanning from the Odyssey (c. 725-675 BC) to The Lincoln Highway (2021)! This is a magnificent and exciting compendium that will appeal to well-travelled readers alike, to those ready to embark on a lifetime of adventure, and even to those who want to keep traveling without leaving their couch. The selection of the books has been based above all on three criteria: firstly, it is a literary work of fiction, for which reason travel books have been expressly excluded; second, each book had to contain a journey that was based on real places, and not imaginary ones, even if those places were not explicitly mentioned; thirdly, the aim was for the book to serve both as a travel companion to different corners of the world and as a "time machine" thanks to the chronological ordering of the entries. In order to cultivate an understanding of the planet and of our fellow men, in addition to traveling, we have the resource of great literature. There is a world to discover and to get lost in, and if we let ourselves be guided by curiosity, it can lead us on an inner journey that changes us for the better. The world is getting smaller: we are all more connected and can explore the planet in ways our ancestors never thought of. And yet, divisions can be seen everywhere. Mistrust spreads and falsehoods spread. Traveling can help us counteract these tendencies, as can reading about other people's experiences in other lands and times.
