Policemen and criminals have always been two sides of the same coin, but no novelist has been able to explore this perverse symbiosis like Philip K. Dick. Fred is the police officer in charge of investigating and arresting Bob Arctor, a dangerous trafficker of the addictive and deadly Substance D. To do this, Fred enters a world where it is difficult to differentiate reality from dreams and immerses himself in a perverse game with Bob, in which he will be both hunter and prey, until the nightmare culminates in a surprising final confrontation between the policeman and the dealer. Caustically funny and eerily accurate in portraying junkies, hangers, dealers, hustlers, and cops, it is perhaps the most baffling drug novel ever written. Director Richard Linklater brought it to the big screen in 2006.
