Un canto al silencio
Rosner, Jennifer
In Poland, as World War II progresses, a mother hides along with her young daughter, a musical prodigy whose slightest sound could cost them their lives. As Nazi soldiers hunt down Jews from her village, Róza and her five-year-old daughter, Shira, flee, seeking refuge in a neighbor's barn. Hiding in the hayfield day and night, Shira struggles to stay calm and quiet, but the music around the farm constantly calls out to her. To appease her daughter, Róza tells her the story of a girl in an enchanted garden. The girl has been forbidden to make any kind of sound, so the yellow bird sings. She sings whatever the girl composes in her head: high-pitched piccolo trills; low-throated contrabassoon growls. Music helps the flowers bloom. In this world come true, Róza can protect Shira from the horrors that surround them. But the day when her refuge is no longer safe arrives, and Róza must make an impossible choice: keep Shira by her side or give him the chance to survive away from her.
