Ulises

Few books have marked contemporary literature in a more profound and radical way than James Joyce's Ulysses. Published by the publisher Sylvia Beach in Paris on February 2, 1922, the same day that Joyce turned 40, Ulises inaugurated a way of narrating in which, in the words of the writer Antonio Soler, 'a concept of a novel in the one that prevails the plot vicissitude, the external. [...] With Joyce, the novel ventures into the most intimate, most hidden corners of the human being and accurately reveals moods, flows and currents of thought, emotions and sensations'. We offer Joyce's novel in the translation of José Salas Subirat, the first to translate it into Spanish. For thirty years it was the only one in existence and with it, as Juan José Saer states, 'many writers from the generation of the fifties or sixties learned several of its resources and narrative techniques in that translation'. Salas Subirat's version has always been recognised, beyond its high historical value, for its great verbal creativity. Lucas Petersen, author of the book The translator of Ulises, published in 2016, has stated that 'it is remarkable how the translation maintains its validity and freshness. She was gaining prestige over the years, when several generations that were trained with her began to show that in several passages she is a very fine-tuned translator, at times even brilliant'.
