Sentimental
Mestres, Albert
The young Madroneta, naive and with a head full of romantic ideas, is the daughter of Francesc Renart i Arús, an important architect in Barcelona in 1840. When Joaquim Rubió i Ors, son of printers and fashion poet, sees in her the possibility of love and at the same time of its ascent in the social scale, Madroneta breathes lightened and confident: they will marry by love. But things will not be so easy for the couple as the father will frontally oppose their marriage. La Madroneta and Quimet grow up and fall in love in a Barcelona that promotes big urban projects but is shaken by social and political conflicts. Caged within the walls, which will soon be demolished, the city periodically erupts with popular revolts and military clashes in its streets. Albert Mestres creates a great love story based on historical figures -of different estates, ambitions and destinies- and vividly recreates the sentimental education of that time, in which desire, freedom and love were limited by social obligations.
