Prohibidas pero no vencidas
mujeres pioneras del deporte
Beltrán, Carlos
Women's sport played an important, albeit unknown, role in the fight for equality for women in all walks of life. Through a selection of episodes from the 19th and 20th centuries, Forbidden but Not Defeated, with an informal and fun style, reveals how different precursors from much of the world - champions, pedagogues, artists, adventurers - achieved what only seemed reserved to the masculine portion of humanity, thus becoming examples of the physical and psychological capacities of women. Being mythical and pioneering in their time, conscientiously hidden first and forgotten later, they influenced the massive practice of sport among women in a period marked by the maturation of feminist claims. Prohibited but not defeated is not only a necessary complement to the history of sport, since most of the names that appear in its pages will surely be unknown to whoever reads it, but it is also essential to understand the history of the struggles for equality in a quest that a few brave people undertook long ago, coming face to face with a hostile reality, circumventing social obsessions and forging small daily revolutions.
