Por qué soy monárquico
una historia familiar
Vila-Sanjuán, Sergio
It takes courage, personal and civic, to make statements that go wrong with the new political correctness. Even more so when that statement is produced in defense of an institution that is experiencing one of the most unfortunate moments -a succession of annus horribilis- of this century, the result of errors, both its own and others, that question it beyond the usual criticisms. From what is seen in these pages, Sergio Vila-Sanjuán does not lack courage. The prestigious Catalan journalist reviews four generations of Spanish monarchs -from Alfonso XIII to Felipe VI- based on the relationship between his family -his grandfather and his father, convinced monarchists- with them. Mixing the wide panorama with the more intimate one, he traces the history of the country throughout the 20th century and what we have been in the 21st, and justifiably argues his monarchical affiliation "for objective, subjective and also family reasons". Apart from the juicy anecdote and the gallery of unique historical figures, the author places special interest in highlighting the implication of the monarchy with the cultural world. It is not so much a matter of defending a lesser evil, but of reasoning the need for an institution that served as the ultimate guarantor of unity, civil peace and progress in a country like ours, so given to Cainite hatreds, especially in these uncertain times. A courageous book that encourages debate.
