Pies descalzos, una historia de Hiroshima, 1
Nakazawa, Keiji
Gen's story is that of a survivor who shows us, through his eyes, how his world becomes hell. At only six years old, he knows the suffering of those who lose a loved one at the hands of war; or those who, like Natsue, the girl he meets a few days after the attack, have been disfigured by burns. Gen, his mother, and his sister Tomoko, born prematurely due to post-traumatic stress, must learn to live in a city where only desperation seems to have a place. Gen's heartbreaking tragedy is inspired by the author's own experience, who in August 1945 was also a six-year-old boy unable to understand what was happening. This monumental work is an ode to all those who survived, a tribute to those who lost their lives and a reminder of the horrors that man is capable of creating. Pies descalzos not only deals with the terrible effects of the atomic bomb, but also shows the ethical dilemmas that a humble family must face whose only desire is to be able to live in peace within the framework of a conservative, militarized culture dedicated to a war cause.
