O libro negro da lingua galega

O libro negro da lingua galega

Callón, Carlos

For the first time, a book focuses on collecting and explaining testimonies of linguistic repression in Galicia over the centuries, with the dissemination of many little-known documents. until 1980: vareadas, kneeling on chickpeas, stones in the pockets, the method of the ring etc. We have paved the way for the study of Franco's fines for "speaking to the public in Galician" and inspections for "exaggerated Galician accent". We revolted with the desecration of the tombstone of Alexandre Bóveda to make his name Spanish and published unpublished school regulations that persecuted Galician in the 18th century. We stop at the refusal of the Council of Castile to authorize a book in Galician in 1616. We see how the director of the Royal Spanish Library in the seventeenth century decided not to print the "Cantigas de Santa María" for finding "extravagance and bad taste" poetry in Galician. We witnessed the burning of books and were even amazed to learn that thousands of letters from Father Sarmiento ended up as toilet paper. We look at the case of the taxi driver who would lose his job if in 48 hours he did not label "Rianjo" in his vehicle and we remember that in 1980 the Ministry of Education expedited and urged to "repudiate" teachers who teach in Galician without legal coverage. Let us dwell on these and other 1001 stone nights so that we can understand how we got here and how we can win the future for the language that unites us.
