Nord i Sud
Gaskell, Elizabeth
One of the great classics of Victorian literature, so far unpublished in Catalan: a tender love story amid the conflicts of the start of the Industrial Revolution. Due to the doubts of the faith of the father, who works as a vicar, the family of the young Margaret Hale is forced to leave the village where she was born, in the idyllic rural England, to go to the town of Milton, in the heart of of the Industrial Revolution. The contrast between the gentle world of his childhood and the harshness of life in the industrialized north could not be more intense. There, Margaret comes into contact with a new social order, dominated by the conflict between factory bosses and textile workers, who live and die in undignified conditions. Once settled there, Mr. Thorton, a young businessman in town, but with little academic training, asks Reverend Hale to give him private lessons, and thus meets his daughter, who disapproves of his attitude towards strikes from his workers and their rude and inelegant ways. Despite being aware of her disdain, Thorton can't help but feel drawn to her.
