Maneras trágicas de matar a una mujer

Maneras trágicas de matar a una mujer

Loraux, Nicole

As in the opera, where the characters sing until their own death, the actors of the Greek tragedy recite the death of women. Heroines who have their own ways of dying: wives commit suicide by appealing to a rope, virgins go to sacrifice. It may even happen that they take away their death from the glorious fighters, pierced by the sword. When you read Nicole Loraux, you notice that the myths of origin, still the heritage of Western culture, have traditionally been read in a false, prejudiced way. With patience and rigor, sticking to the text and the context, the letter and the strict meaning of the words, Loraux discovers a double history: the way in which the political discourse of the Athenians founds citizenship legitimizing the power of men and excluding to women, an operation that has been silently and centuries-old repeated, perhaps without malice, considering it a natural fact, the male historians who have dedicated themselves to studying the Greeks. Reflecting with Loraux on a culture that has disappeared and is still in force, puts into crisis many of the theories that have been constructed about women, including some of the stereotypes of the various feminisms.
