Los Pazos de Ulloa
Pardo Bazán, Emilia, Condesa de
The narrative diptych formed by "Los Pazos de Ulloa" and "Mother Nature" constitutes, without a doubt, the most famous work of Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851-1921). When the young priest Don Julián appears at the Pazos de Ulloa estate, in rural Galicia, to act as administrator, the world with which he finds himself is far from any greatness and, in terms of the mechanisms and passions that in they rule, close to a medieval primitivism. Backwardness and decadence, ambitions and isolation, instinct in the face of society, the inanity of the nobility in the face of the iron determination of the villager are the axes around which the action of a novel that caused a great scandal revolves upon its publication in 1886, due to its ascription to naturalism, the harshness of the situations it narrates and its descriptions.
