Los orígenes de la novela

Los orígenes de la novela

García Gual, Carlos

The novel is the most modern and prolific genre of the European tradition. Its invention, logically, was not accidental, but the product of a very broad cultural process that occurred in two fundamental moments for the development of European culture: Classical Antiquity and the High Middle Ages. In this book, Carlos García Gual links both scenarios through two fundamental studies in a single volume: The Origins of the Novel and The First European Novels. The first studies the birth of the novel, placing it within the general historical process through works such as the Iliad, the Odyssey or the Satyricon, among many others. The second, on the other hand, immerses himself in the medieval novel and analyzes the social motivations and the typical themes of this literature.
