Los alpinistas de Stalin

Gras, Cédric

This is the never before told story of the Abalakov brothers, two mountain climbers who worked for the glory of the Soviet regime and who were victims of the Stalinist purges. Vitali and Yevgueni were two Siberian orphans who enjoyed climbing before becoming expert mountaineers. They made many expeditions between the Caucasus and Central Asia culminating in the 1930s with their ascents of the impressive peaks of Stalin and Lenin. In a culture in which mountaineering was dictated by the ideology of a new world, through the conquest of new territories and war, Vitali Abalákov was still a victim of the Great Terror and the purges of 1938. He was finally freed. Despite losing several fingers in a high-altitude snowstorm, he returned to mountaineering and once again, heading to Spartak, managed to return to the highest level. His brother Yevgeny died in 1948 when he was about to climb Everest.
