Levantado del suelo
Saramago, José
This novel tells the story of a saga of landless peasants from the Portuguese Alentejo from 1910 to the day of the Carnation Revolution. With the wit and irony that characterize his work, Saramago immerses us in a way of being in the world that has been that of the rural workers of Portugal -and also that of the Spanish-, "people of little to have and a lot to feel" on which all the obligations fell without enjoying any rights. The difference between classes in the latifundium, the role of the Church, the fight for freedom, the love that does not need words to be total, the hard life and the easy death throughout several generations are the fundamental themes of this work. .
