Medical writers and medical writers: two terms that have often been used, respectively, to define those who abandoned the practice of Medicine to become writers or developed their work without departing from medical practice. A prototype of the medical writer would be Pío Baroja, as was Anton Chekhov of the medical writer. But without a doubt this classification is overly simplistic. Doctors Francisco Gallardo and Ismael Yebra try to delve deeper into the dilemma through the life and work of renowned writers and doctors: Gottfried Benn, Arthur Conan Doyle, Gregorio Marañón, Arthur Schnitzler, W. Somerset Maugham, Miguel Torga and many others, without forget illustrious doctors like Rita Levi-Montalcini or Nawal El Saadawi.
