Las colecciones El Cuento Nuevo
(1918-1919 y 1934-1935)
Palenque, Marta
Rico Cerezo, Ángela
In this volume, two Madrid collections entitled El Cuento Nuevo are studied. Both are part of the short novel collection market, but they are not complementary series, but rather independent ones, printed in 1918-1919 and 1934-1935. Some of the most popular novelists of Hispanic literature between modernism and the avant-garde collaborate in the first, such as Rafael Cansinos Assens, Enrique Gómez Carrillo, Diego San José, Alfonso Vidal y Planas, Joaquín Belda or Antonio de Hoyos y Vinent. In the second, the authors are members of the generation that lived through the Republic and, after the war, took opposite paths. Here Florentino Hernández Girbal, Alfredo Serrano or the director of the collection, Ángel Villatoro, along with Alfredo Marqueríe and Tomás Borrás participate. The series testify to unequal moments of the popular Spanish short novel, which confirms the editorial strategy and the content of the stories, which oscillate between decadence, social naturalism, political denunciation and avant-garde humor. The book delves into the material features of the two El Cuento Nuevo and stops at the commentary of texts and authors. Add, in addition, the anthology of some of the most suggestive stories.
