Las artes de altar en la Edad Media
del museo a la iglesia: un viaje de ida y vuelta
Kroesen, Justin
The four essays collected in this book propose a reflection on the art of the Middle Ages present in museums and churches, proposing a round trip between the Prado Museum and some of the thousands of temples of that period that dot the Spanish and European landscape. With the aim of offering a contextual reading of the different elements that make up the so-called altar arts, such as frontispieces, tabernacles and ciboria, special attention is paid to the altarpiece, the pinnacle of Hispanic medieval art, tracing its development in the 14th and 15th centuries and analysing its location inside churches. In addition to studying the original setting of the pieces, they are placed in relation to other European examples and are thus framed within a broader artistic landscape.
