La vida es eterna
biografía de Víctor Jara
Amorós, Mario
Throughout these pages, he narrates Víctor Jara's childhood in the rural world, when his mother, Amanda, introduced him to the music of the peasants; his youth in the humble town of Los Nogales in Santiago de Chile, his days in a Catholic seminary, his military service in the army and his incorporation into the avant-garde Theater School of the University of Chile; his consecration as a theater director, his sentimental relationship with Joan Turner and his family life. He also delves into his intense activity as a soloist, which reached its most fertile stage when he supported Popular Unity and President Salvador Allende as a communist militant. And he recounts the tragic day of the coup, the subsequent arrest and torture and his last moments from an exceptional source: the thousands of pages of the judicial process initiated to clarify his murder. When fifty years have passed since that crime, the figure of Víctor Jara and his songs remain alive. "I sing that has been brave / it will always be a new song", he prophesied in "Manifesto", one of his last compositions. Mario Amorós has written an essential book.
