That man who during the day was dedicated to the rosary trade and who earned his living through religious tourism, found in the hypocritical post-war German society an accomplice for his abuses. What made his father so despicable? What made his mother have the courage to stand up to him? How responsible is a country that does not finish burying the horrors of the past? These are some of the questions that the narrator asks himself as he reviews his childhood and tries to investigate the reasons for evil and violence intrinsic to human beings. Marked with anger, hatred and uncompromising authenticity, Altmann's prose has been compared to that of Thomas Bernhard for his ability to describe the descent into the darkest side of the human being.
