La Primera República Española (1873-1874)

de la utopía al caos

Vilches, Jorge

The First Republic (1873-1874) is one of the most important and unknown episodes in the history of Spain. It was born as a consequence of the forced failure of the monarchy of Amadeo de Saboya, not as a result of a plebiscite or a movement of opinion. So, on February 11, 1873, when it was proclaimed, Spain was still a monarchy. The Federal, as it was known, was preached as a political and social utopia that would bring peace, prosperity and happiness. However, the ruling elite demonstrated its contempt for democracy by preferring the revolution, the coup d'état and the conspiracy to legality, consensus and the education of the people in democratic public mores. Soon the country was torn apart.
