When Jim Nashe is abandoned by his wife, he throws himself into a wandering life. He before he has received an unexpected inheritance from a father he never knew and that will allow him to roam America in a red Saab, the best car he ever owned. Nashe goes from motel to motel, enjoys the speed, lives in almost complete solitude and experiences the joyous and heartbreaking seduction of utter uprooting. After a year of this life, and with barely ten thousand dollars left in the inheritance, he meets Jack Pozzi, a very young professional poker player. The two men strike up a peculiar relationship and Jim Nashe becomes Pozzi's capitalist partner. A single session of poker could make you rich. His opponents will be Flower and Stone, two curious millionaires who have won a fabulous fortune playing the lottery and live together as two modern Bouvard and Pecuchet.
