La invención del arte

una historia cultural

Shiner, Larry

In The Invention of Art, Larry Shiner invites us to reconsider art history as a whole, and argues that some of the ideas we all have about art history (such as that art began in Ancient Greece or the Renaissance) are, in reality, modern inventions, and that the line that separates art and craft was a product of the crucial transformations that occurred in Europe during the 18th century. He also shows how the modern system sustains its hegemony by assimilating artists and musicians who resist it and by drawing a strict distinction between artists and craftsmen, high art and craft.
