As a result of the reparations demanded of Germany after the First World War, a severe economic crisis caused the German currency to collapse just over a hundred years ago. Josep Pla, correspondent in Berlin for the newspaper La Publicitat, was a witness. In the company of another Catalan journalist, Eugeni Xammar, he moved around the country (in the Ruhr basin, for example, then occupied by French and Belgian troops), he lucidly grasped all the nuances of the situation, he detected ne the main characters (among them, a "hysterical nationalism" named Adolf Hitler) and knew how to relate everything he saw in magnificent chronicles that he sent to the newspaper. Eighty-eight of those chronicles are now collected for the first time in a volume that is a first-rate contribution to Planian bibliography.
