La esclavitud femenina ; La emancipación de las mujeres
textos clave del feminismo liberal
Mill, John Stuart
Mill, Harriet Taylor
At the end of the 19th century, a good part of humanity boasted of having left behind the dark times of barbarism and political arbitrariness. But, despite the unstoppable advance of the democratic movements, half of the human race continued to be subjected to an unusual regime of servitude: stripped of the most basic civil rights and condemned to fulfill a merely reproductive function, women were a simple appendage of men, to whom they had to surrender in all orders of existence. The philosopher John Stuart Mill and his wife Harriet Taylor dedicated a good part of their lives to analyzing the forms that male dominance had taken and rigorously and courageously exposed the outdated prejudices, contrary to the liberal spirit of modernity, on which it was based. . This volume contains the two most relevant texts of this intellectual project: La esclavfía femenina by John Stuart Mill (1868), which was translated in 1891 by Mrs. Emilia Pardo Bazán and of which we offer a corrected and updated version, and La emancipación de las mujeres (1851) by Harriet Taylor, which to date had not been published in Spanish.
