Every civilization is configured around images that are collectively shared. Its members are characterized by a peculiar way of seeing the world in which they live, so that the difference in perceptions marks the diversity of each civilization. Mary Beard illustrates this with a fascinating double exploration. The first part of it concerns body art: the various visions of the human body through time and space, from the gigantic statues of the pharaohs to the terracotta warriors of China. The second addresses an even more complex issue: that of images about the problems that all religions, ancient or modern, have had to represent the divine.
