La ballena tatuada

historia de la primera vuelta al mundo

Adanti, Darío

On September 6, 1522, eighteen starving and sick men arrived at the port of Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz) aboard the Victoria, a battered and leaky ship. They had achieved, after three years of hardship, something unprecedented: to reach the same port from which they had set sail, always sailing in the same direction, from east to west, discovering the passage that joins the Atlantic and the Pacific, and thus taking the first turn to the world of History. This false graphic documentary, in which Darío Adanti mixes the chronicle of travel with legends and real or invented seafaring songs, is both a recreation of this first circumvallation trip to the Earth and a tribute to the navigators of the 16th to 19th centuries who they dared to explore those waters in such precarious conditions, without forgetting the Haush, Selk'nam or Aónikenk, inhabitants of the southern lands since ancient times. Let's set sail through time, let's draw the first maps, let's sail through the wind with Magellan and Elcano on the first round-the-world tour of History. Melville and the Tattooed Whale -with mystical hieroglyphs on their back- will accompany us on this great journey.
