In 1930s Prague, a young apprentice waiter, Jan, gets his first job ready to become a hotel owner and become a millionaire. Ready and ambitious, he will make everything dependent on achieving success and social recognition. But Jan's decisions will not always be right: he marries a German woman who worships Hitler just as Nazi troops enter Prague and becomes a millionaire just as Communism is implemented in her country.
