Història del fill

Prix Renaudot, 2020

Lafon, Marie-Hélène

A woman who lives in Paris leaves her newborn son in the hands of her sister, in the country. Growing up, the son will see his mother at Christmas and in the summer and for almost thirty years he will not know who his father is: a family story that hides a secret behind the silence, like so many others. But this is not a traditional family story, rather the author traces here a prodigious mosaic of emotions. The structure of the book -each chapter corresponds to a different moment and approach, depending on the character who stars in it- allows subtle exploration of the feelings of all those involved. The language is poetic, rhythmic and concise: the narrative covers a century, from 1908 to 2008, and is collected in just over a hundred pages.
