Galdós y la miseria
El Torres
Belmonte, Alberto
(il.)
January 20, 1919, Benito Pérez Galdós, already almost blind and disabled, attends the inauguration of the monument in his honor in the Retiro. That same night, a man died with his throat cut at the foot of the statue, and the murderer was only Galdós's nurse, Elena. Ten years earlier, Galdós is lost. Old age and loss of sight affect him enormously, and Madrid seems overwhelming to him, to the point that he finds comfort escaping his memories when he cannot escape to Santander. It is then when he meets Elena Mideres, a girl who has fallen into disgrace, nicknamed "La Miseria", whom he welcomes as a protégé. Elena's life is as Galdosian as the author's own novels. Both will share the memories of their lives, the lost loves and the financial troubles while they "flane" through that omnipresent Madrid, like a fierce scene.
