Magic has been banned in Syhl Shallow for as long as best friends Jax and Callyn can remember. They used to love stories about powerful magicsmiths and mythical scravers who conjured fire or controlled ice, but now they have learned that there is nothing but danger in magic; it was what killed Callyn's parents and left her in the care of her little sister. Magic has never helped Jax, who lost his foot in an accident for which his father has not stopped punishing him. Neither will magic save any of them when the tax collector knocks on their door. Jax and Callyn are shocked to discover that a magicsmith has returned to Syhl Shallow and married the new queen. Now the town is expected to simply accept the presence of dangerous magic around them, and no one likes the idea. When a stranger comes to town and offers Jax and Callyn money in exchange for delivering secret messages to an anti-magical faction, the choice is an obvious one, even if it means they may be helping to plot to destroy their new king. It is a risk they are willing to take. Until another visitor arrives in town: the handsome Lord Tycho, the king's messenger, the man charged with discovering who is plotting against the throne. Suddenly, Jax and Callyn find themselves thrust into a world of shifting alliances, dangerous flirtations, and ancient magic, where even the deepest loyalties will be tested.
