Faros
luces del Norte
Herrera Menéndez, Julio
There may be no other human-made work that inspires as many and as varied emotions as lighthouses. Loneliness, protection, calm and at the same time agitation, melancholy, nostalgia, admiration and, above all, the perception of an architecture that, although it still has a practical function, gives the feeling of being something of the past, where these illuminated and throbbing towers they were the only umbilical cord between the land and the sailors who crossed its dangerous coasts. Perhaps that is why we do not see them as a simple and cold stone construction, but rather as something living and human that has protected sailors and fishermen for centuries from the violent mood swings of the sea. These ancient stone structures are also the image of a friendly and sustainable integration, almost in harmony with the nature that surrounds them, resisting being domesticated. For all these reasons, lighthouses are one more part of a landscape that is often overwhelming, as they often rise in truly wild places of stunning beauty. This unity between the lighthouse and its surroundings is what you want to capture in the photographs in this book, but looking for the personality of each lighthouse, its spirit and its most attractive and spectacular images, even if they are the least common; That is why we play with sunrises, sunsets, storms, storms, mists, the fleeting moment ..., and always trying to combine the terrible force of nature with the elements that best represent the idiosyncrasy of each lighthouse. Lighthouses. Northern Lights is, in short, a photographic and evocative tour of fifty lighthouses in the north of the peninsula, from the lighthouse of Cabo Silleiro, in Galicia, to the lighthouse of Biarritz, in the French Basque Country.
