In a world dominated by the brutal Vathek empire lives a dreamy young woman named Amani. Amani dreams of what life was like before the occupation, she dreams of writing poetry, she dreams of one day going on a great adventure and traveling to some faraway place. But when she gets her chance for an adventure, Amani fears that she was not as she had dreamed: she is kidnapped by the regime and secretly taken to the royal palace where she discovers that she is virtually identical to Princess Maram. . The princess is so hated that she needs a double, someone who can go in her place to public events in which someone could attempt on her life. Forced into this new role, Amani is soon seduced by the beauty of the palace and that of the princess's betrothed, Idris. But the glitter of the royal court hides a world of violence and fear. If Amani wants to see her family again, she must imitate the princess perfectly...because one mistake could be deadly.
