Elwood grew up in Florida in the 1960s and is about to begin college. Serious, polite and hardworking, he dreams of participating in the incipient civil rights movement, until an innocent mistake condemns him to enter a youth reformatory called Nickel Academy, where he discovers that for a black boy a small mistake to destroy any future option.
