An American, John Cort, and a Frenchman, Max Huber, are part of an expedition in search of vori in the regions of the Ubangui River as explorers. In one of the bivouacs, a stampede of elephants destroys the convoy, and only the two protagonists remain, Khamis the beater and Llanga, an indigenous boy.
