In April 1944 Rudolf Vrba became the first Jew to escape from Auschwitz. Against all odds, after narrowly dodging German bullets, he and his escape partner scaled mountains and crossed rivers to reach freedom. Vrba wanted to warn the last Jews in Europe of the fate that awaited them at the end of the railway. A brilliant student of science and mathematics, he memorized every detail of the Nazi machine and risked everything to collect the first data on the Final Solution. After his escape, he smuggled out the first comprehensive account of what went on in the death camps, a detailed account that would eventually find its way into the hands of Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and the Pope, ultimately saving thousands of Jewish lives. The Master of the Fugue is the story of a man who deserves to take his place in history alongside Anne Frank, Oskar Schindler and Primo Levi, all of whom are protagonists of the darkest chapter of our recent past.
