Alex Ehren is a poet and teacher on the 31st block of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the children's block. He spent his days trying to survive while illegally teaching children, trying to shield them as best he could from the horrible reality that lived in the country. But trying to teach the children was not the only illegal activity in which Alex was involved. Alex kept a journal. This masterful autobiographical novel tells the true story of five hundred Jewish children who lived in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp between September 1943 and June 1944.
