El fin del juego
XXV Premio de novela Ciudad de Salamanca
Carbonell, Xavier (1995- )
A labyrinth of antiques, lithographs, ghosts and incomplete stories corners the protagonist of this novel in a game of mirrors. The discovery of sixteen colonial engravings submerges him in an enigma where the risk is masked with parodies and puns of words. What do these plates represent and what is their origin? What tension is contained behind those smiling and immobile faces? In the background there is always a woman, a brotherhood of foolproof friends and a slight and invisible enemy. Characters who express their bitterness with humor, their corruption with disenchantment and their fear of death with a feverish cult of friendship and tobacco smoke. A plot where the human condition is questioned, the roughness of an island that falls in love with its castaways with heat and collapsing mansions, where life is a return in time. The end of the game is also an exciting sentimental journey to the bowels of Cuba, its language of jokes and simulations, its literature of roots and exiles; an invitation to read a country capable of telling sharp stories, full of sadness and meaning, and dangerous as a labyrinth whose center is death.
