The history of Soviet Russia has undergone a total renovation in recent years, as a consequence of the declassifi cation of millions of new documents. One of the most valuable fruits of this renovation is this splendid book by Sheila Fitzpatrick, a professor at the Universities of Chicago and Sydney, and one of the foremost authorities on research at this time. Stalin's team tells us about the group of characters -Molotov, Kaganovich, Mikoyan, Khrushchev, Malenkov, Ordzhonikidze, Beria, etc.- who collaborated with Stalin throughout his career and who were, moreover, his usual companions, almost his family. Thanks to the extremely rich testimony of his letters, memoirs and documents, we can follow with them, from within, the terrible years of collectivization and the "great purges", the anguishing experience of the Second World War, the decline of the dictator when his own lives were in danger- and the struggles for power after his death.
