Bored with the London summer and the monotony of his job at the Foreign Office, Carruthers accepts his friend Davies's invitation to go on a Baltic cruise. But he soon realizes that the curious journey is not going to be one of pleasure. The Dulcibella turns out to be not a yacht, but a rickety boat, and as they navigate the treacherous waters and quicksand, Carruthers realizes that his knowledge of German may have an unforeseen possibility... It's the beginning of an adventure so dangerous. as exciting and full of challenges. And little by little Carruthers is infected by the enthusiasm and temperance of his friend, to discover within himself new forces and a, hitherto unknown, moral sense.
