El Corpus de Sang

El Corpus de Sang

7 de juny de 1640

Simon i Tarrés, Antoni

On June 7, 1640, a great riot led by a mass of reapers entered Barcelona, as well as by numerous members of the popular layers of the Catalan capital, ended the life of Dalmau de Queralt, Count of Santa Coloma and Viceroy of Catalonia. The already very tense relations between the Catalan institutions and the Court of Madrid since then entered a point of fission of no return, all leading to a revolutionary process that would lead to the separation of Catalonia from the Spanish monarchy. The eminent historian Antoni Simon offers us a vivid and detailed account of those days of revolt that culminated in the well-known day of Corpus Christi, while giving voice to the many contemporaries - peasants, menstrals, judges, nobles, ecclesiastics - who through their personal diaries and letters, they left a direct testimony of one of the most notorious episodes in the History of Catalonia.
