Democracia
la última utopía
Cruz, Manuel (1951- )
Democracy has been the object, for some time, of attacks and criticisms of a very different kind. Some lesson should be drawn from so much accumulation of reproaches. Because to the absolutely real danger that it could end up being damaged by the onslaught of authoritarianisms of various kinds, we should add another, of a different nature, but not for that less, related to the sphere of ideas. It would be the danger of understanding democracy in purely instrumental terms, as a mere set of formal procedures to organize life in common. This would mean disregarding the enormous emancipatory potentialities offered by democratic systems and the possibility that they offer us to finally materialize those values that gave birth to the modern world.
