It is difficult to imagine the 20th century -so advanced, so cruel, so historically and literarily complex- without taking into account the work of Isaak Bábel, or without appearing on the lists of the best stories in history some of those that the author compiled for books like Historia de mi palomar, Army of cavalry or Tales of Odesa, which, luckily, the reader in Spanish has been able to enjoy. Bábel obsessively pursued the perfect story, radically renewed the art of storytelling and conquered a new and central hybrid literary space for the short genre, the dimensions and consequences of which have not yet been fully explored or mapped.
