The girl gets into the caboose of the train, notices a man staggering down the aisle, and wishes he wasn't going to her compartment, number 6. Her wish is useless, and she sits on her bed, facing that man. unknown that radiates an icy cold. They are both silent as the Trans-Siberian lurches into motion, leaving the dry, icy night of Moscow behind. She wants to get away from there because she needs to distance herself from her own life, with her happiness and her misfortune, but now she feels homesick. He pours her a glass of dark tea and begins to speak harshly. She's going to have to listen to him until the end, while the locomotive whistles, the rails screech, and the rattle of the train hits metallic across the steppe. Rosa Liksom has received the Finland Prize and the Nordic Prize from the Swedish Academy. Her work has been translated into nineteen languages. Her parents were reindeer herders and in her youth she lived in various European communes. In addition to being a writer, she is a painter and filmmaker. Compartment No. 6, the film adaptation of this novel, was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Festival.
